Frequently asked questions about hypnosis

Here are a few of our most frequently asked questions. Should you have any further questions, please consult our Contact Us page.

Q: Is hypnosis safe?

A: Hypnosis was endorsed by the American Medical Association in 1958 as being a “valid therapeutic tool.”  The National Institute of Health Technology Assessment Panel confirmed in 1995 that hypnosis is an effective adjunct in alleviating pain.  Hypnotists often receive referrals from medical and psychological professionals in order to assist their clients.

Q: Can I be hypnotized?

A: Anyone of normal intelligence can be hypnotized as long as they are willing and able to concentrate and follow instructions.

Q: Will I reveal secrets while in hypnosis?

A: No. While in hypnosis, you are still in control.  You would not reveal deep secrets unless you wanted to.

Q: Is hypnosis only for weak-minded or gullible people?

A: The opposite is true.  Generally, intelligent and strong willed clients have an even greater success with hypnosis, because of their commitment to change and ability to concentrate.

Q: While in hypnosis, would I actually be asleep?

A: No, hypnosis is not sleep.  While in hypnosis, you are deeply relaxed with you eyes closed as if you were asleep.  However, you are still aware of everything that is going on in and around you, as well as within your inner mind.  It is like being in the state of mind that is between being awake and being asleep.

Q: Could hypnosis cause someone to do something that is against their morals?

A: No.  All levels of the mind have a protective function.  If a suggestion were made while in hypnosis that you did not agree with, you would reject it and possibly emerge from hypnosis.

Q: What about stage hypnosis shows, in which volunteers go onstage and do crazy things?

A: Many people have seen stage hypnosis demonstrations at comedy clubs or on television, and mistakenly think that the hypnotist has forced or tricked the volunteers to do strange or unusual things.  These shows are very entertaining and fun to watch, but keep in mind that the hypnotist cannot really make anyone do anything.  The individuals who volunteer to go up on stage are usually extraverted and uninhibited types who are very willing to do the things that they are asked to do.  The stage hypnotist knows how to weed out the very best subjects, the “show-offs,” having them remain on the stage while sending the rest back to their seats.

Q: Is it possible to “get stuck” in hypnosis?

A: No. While in hypnosis, you remain in control and have the power to emerge at any time. All you have to do is open your eyes.
